That sweet innocent word fragrance, it sounds like a field of cotton candy or a baby wrapped in a soft lavender smelling muslin. This word is often associated with nostalgia, happy memories and pure nostril bliss and you might think that alternative healthy fragrances are not worth the time and effort.
But it is far from anything like that and you should give this some thought. The single word “fragrance” may contain anywhere from 50 to 4000 distinct chemicals. Do you want to know what they are? Sorry, that is a well-kept trade secret for most products.
There is little to no legislation in the EU, Australia or US that forces manufacturers to list ingredients in detergents. In fact, when I looked into this a little deeper, I found that legislation was poor around the entire world. For certain countries, it was impossible to find anything at all.
In July 2019 Europe made a big step forward. manufacturers are required to enlist ingredients that cause either harm or are untested, however, they are still able to export products without having to fully disclose all ingredients.
So why are they doing this?
The bottom line is that they don’t want us to know what is in the products, because what is in them, is often highly toxic, can disrupt the endocrine system and not safe. Some of these ingredients are some of the most toxic chemicals on earth! Which is why you want to seriously think about alternative healthy fragrances.
How do we know this?
The environmental protection agency and Environmental Working Group have done multiple studies and tests to show us the impacts these chemicals have on the environment, animals, and our bodies. They have also found that the average fragrant contains about 14 secret chemicals that aren’t listed on the label. Many of which are linked to hormone disruption, allergic reactions and potentially cancers, as about 80% of those chemicals are not being tested for humans safety in personal care products.
Even if we think we make a good choice and buy ‘green’ or ‘organic’ products, they are often far from being better than others, thus highlighting the prevalence of intentionally misleading information provided to consumers.
Fragrances also hide behind different labels. They are called perfume, parfum, essential oil blend and aroma. All of them sound like cotton candy to me and yet we still don’t know what hides behind those nostalgic words. So, we really don’t know what we are using on our bodies, our children’s bodies, in our house, near our animals and also what we do to our environment. We blindly trust because clever and creative advertising tells us to do so and we often judge the quality of a product on whether it smells good or not and their illusional marketing strategies.
Fragrances are found in most personal care products including sunscreen, shampoo, soap, body wash, deodorant, body lotion, makeup, facial cream, skin toner, serums, exfoliating scrubs and perfume as well as all commercial household and cleaning product, laundry detergent, dishwashing tablets, air fresheners and many more.
