Pregnancy and becoming, or being, a young mother is significant and a special time. It is the time where you receive, give and nurture the gift of life. Birthing and nurturing a healthy life requires an enormous amount of physical, emotional and spiritual energy, which when fully nourished will enhance the joys of bonding and raising a young healthy child.

The individual journey of health and wellbeing begins long before a child is born. Becoming mothers that strongly value their personal wellbeing, by for example eating healthy wholesome foods, reducing daily stress through mindfulness practices, and maintaining some form of physical activity will provide the growing foetus with an environment that nurtures and enhances health to begin with.

Having a well-balanced and healthy diet is critical during pregnancy as well as for the entire time of breastfeeding. During that time the developing foetus and infant will receive a broad range of vital minerals, vitamins, amino-acids, protein and fatty acids; and importantly their initial immunity.

New research reveals that Omega-3s reduce foetal and neonatal deaths linked to bacteria, suggesting they could prevent some miscarriages and other pregnancy complications in women.

Receiving and having sufficient levels of Omega-3 fatty acids is often forgotten, overlooked or down-played. Omega-3 fatty acids are however essential for all humans, but especially to the foetus for developing normal brain, heart and hormone functions, and maintaining natural immunity by having healthy body cells.

The most important Omega-3 fatty acids are DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) a key structural building block of the brain and central nervous system, DPA (docosapentaenoic acid) for fat metabolism and resolution of chronic inflammation, and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) for heart health and blood pressure regulation. These Omega-3s are only found within seafood and cannot be synthesised by the body. Whilst the body can produce a miniature amount of DHA and EPA from ALA (alpha-Linolenic acid) which is mostly found in nuts and vegetable oils, this amount is by large not sufficient.

During the last trimester of pregnancy, your foetus alone will require about 50 to 70mg of DHA a day!

During the time of pregnancy and breastfeeding, women will require significantly more vital nutrients, especially DHA, DPA and EPA, as they deplete at a faster rate. Leading up to, but especially during the last trimester of pregnancy, the foetus alone will for example require about 50 to 70mg of DHA a day. To place this in context, two standard servings of fish per week only provide about 100 to 250mg per day of Omega-3 fatty acids, of which 50 to 100 mg is from DHA. However, the dietary goal during pregnancy is around 450 to 650mg, of which 220 to 300 is DHA.

Pregnant women, as well as breastfeeding mothers are therefore prone to becoming Omega-3 deficient, as the infant will obtain its vital Omega-3s for initial development from human breast milk. In order to avoid becoming Omega-3 deficient, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are left essentially with having to supplement through high quality marine Omega-3 fatty acids. When well-planned and prepared for, the mother will ensure that her developing baby will receive the best possible nutrients, whilst remaining well-nourished herself.

With regard to nutrition, and more specifically in terms of Omega-3 consumption while pregnant, dietitians advise two to three portions of fatty fish from the sea per week (such as mackerel, herring, sardines, salmon). This is to ensure a minimum amount of at least 450 mg marine Omega-3s per day (of which at least 200 mg should be in the form of DHA) is received. The recommended minimum amount varies worldwide and some countries have higher minimum standards; for example for pregnant women in Australia 900 mg of marine Omega-3s (of which 800 mg in DHA fat) is advised.

For pregnant women who do not regularly consume fish or have Omega-3 deficiency, risk having extremely low levels of DHA, DPA and EPA Omega-3s, and thus supplementation with quality marine Omega-3 fatty acids is highly recommended. For vegetarians and vegans, other sources of marine Omega-3 such as seaweed and algae oil provide an alternative option.

A prenatal Omega-3 recommendation is to allow at least six months prior to conception to building up these important essential fatty acids (DHA, DPA & EPA). It is equally as important after birthing and during breastfeeding. Once breastfeeding is phased out, mothers should ensure they replenish the depleted nutrients, especially DPA, DHA and EPA.
